About us

The Centre for Mechanised Mining Systems is a joint initiative of the University of the Witwatersrand (one of South Africa's leading tertiary engineering institutions), the country's mining companies and mining equipment suppliers. While fundamental mechanisation principles are common to all mines, each mine is unique with requirements that differ from those of its neighbours.

What is mechanised mining?

There is nothing mysterious about mechanised mining. But, by the same token, there is no catch-all definition of what is an appropriate mechanised system.

Profile and vision

Our vision is clear: To develop skills and capabilities that make a significant contribution to the successful implementation of mechanised and automated mining in Southern Africa.

History

Like those of many other positive initiatives, The Centre's beginnings were informal - a low-key investigation into the viability of a Centre for Mechanised Mining Systems began in 2004.
